Wellness Coaching & Cancer
Doctors take care of the physical aspects of cancer, but sometimes cancer patients need a little help getting a perspective on the impact of the disease on their lives. Some common therapies or techniques cancer patients, current and former, have found useful include yoga, exercise and meditation.
Wellness Coaching Study
A new study published in the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences has found that wellness coaching can also have a positive effect on patients enduring cancer treatment and patients in remission. Most studies confirm that keeping a positive attitude is beneficial to cancer patients. It should be noted that such techniques are not meant to replace traditional cancer treatments.
Cancer and Exercise
The benefits of exercise in preventing or easing the effects of some diseases such as cancer has long been confirmed by research and patient assessments, wellness coaching brings a more concentrated effort to this concept. The study, conducted by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, suggests that wellness programs may have lasting benefits in terms of reducing stress and anxiety. The study also suggests an overall positive impact on a patient’s quality of life. Wellness programs for cancer patients are similar to other exercise programs by emphasizing the complete health and well being of the individual.
A Healthy Lifestyle
The American Cancer Society already recommends a generally healthy lifestyle for cancer survivors to reduce the chance of recurrence. Most survivors, however, fail to initiate an exercise routine, according to the wellness coaching study. Patients with cancers such as mesothelioma may benefit from wellness coaching so they can be better prepared for treatment. Generally, the mesothelioma prognosis is not good since it is often detected in later stages.
Making a Connection Between Wellness Coaching and Cancer
The concept of applying wellness coaching to cancer patients came about in 2004 when wellness coach Pam Schmid was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to apply techniques she normally teaches others to herself. Schmid noticed that other patients going through what she did had no real support. The study on wellness coaching examined some of the issues Schmid observed herself. The study observed 30 prostate, breast and colorectal cancer survivors given six wellness coaching lessons for a period of three months. Most participants reported tolerating treatment better and having an overall better outlook on their prognosis.
How Wellness Coaching Works
Aside from the physical aspect of fitness, wellness coaching gets the patient to think about what is going well in their life. This includes a reflection on what has been successful int he past and what will lead to success in the future. The process includes motivational training and interviewing, group support, positive psychology and appreciative inquiry. Patients interested in wellness coaching should contact their health care professional for additional information on available programs in their area.
